Tule fog does one useful thing in December. It makes a clean line of lights along the eaves look sharp from three houses away, and it makes a saggy line look worse. Elk Grove roofline Christmas lights are the job we do most, and the whole thing rides on what’s holding the strand to the house. Call (916) 823-8394 and we’ll talk through yours.

    What holds the lights up

Clips. Not staples, not nails, not a screw into the fascia. A clip grips the gutter lip or slides under the edge of a shingle, then lets go again after the holidays without leaving a mark. Staples leave rows of little holes in painted trim, and those holes take in water all winter.

Every bulb sits in its own clip, pointed the same direction. That part is slow. It’s also the difference between a line that looks ruled and a line that looks tossed up there. Wind gets a clear run across the south county, so each clip gets seated properly instead of just hooked on.

Tile roofs and shingle roofs get different handling

Lakeside is a good example of the tile side of town. That community’s own standards call for tile, shake or cement-type roofing, so expect tile or something close to it around Lake Heron. Tile cracks if you stand on it wrong, and a cracked tile lets water in long after the lights are gone. On those houses we work from the ladder at the eave wherever we can, and the clips grab the gutter or tuck under the bottom course of tile without lifting it.

Composition shingle is more forgiving. The clip slides flat under the first row of shingles, no adhesive involved. When shingles have aged and gone brittle we switch to the gutter so nothing gets bent back. An older house, like some of the bungalows in Old Town Elk Grove, may have no gutter across the front at all, just a painted fascia. That gets a clip made for the fascia edge.

    Gables, peaks and two-story eaves

A straight gutter run is the easy part. The look of the house gets decided at the peaks. On a gable we run the lights up both sloped edges to the point and make the two sides meet evenly, because a lopsided peak is what everybody notices from the street. Dormers and the little roof over the porch get the same care or get left dark on purpose. Half-lit is the one thing we talk people out of.

Two-story eaves are where most homeowners quit, and fair enough. The big two-story plans in Madeira, with three-car garages and a second-floor peak, need a tall ladder, a second person footing it, and a dry morning. We don’t climb on wet roofs and we don’t work the high stuff in heavy fog. Glenbrooke is the opposite case. Every house there is single-story, so the ladder work is short and the day goes quickly.

Corners matter too. Where the roofline turns, the strand turns with it on a clip instead of stretching across the gap. Cords drop behind a downspout if the house has one handy, and the plug goes to an outdoor outlet on a timer so everything shuts off late at night by itself.

If a section goes dark during the season anyway, phone (916) 823-8394 and we’ll be out to fix it.

We quote over the phone or from pictures. From the far sidewalk, fit the full front of the house into one shot, then add a picture of each side if the roof wraps around. Tell us which edges you want lit and whether there’s an outlet out front. Dial (916) 823-8394 and we’ll say where to send them, or start from the contact page. We bring the lights, so you aren’t buying or testing anything.

Most people add something at ground level once the roof is planned. Wrapped trunks in the front yard fill the dark space below the eaves, and porch post wraps tie the entry to the roof. If you live around the lake, our Lakeside page covers what that association says about holiday lighting. We’re also down in Galt most weeks of the season, plus Wilton and Vineyard.

    Down in January

We return in January, pop each clip loose, roll up the strands and load them out. Your garage stays free of light bins, and the gutters go back to carrying rain.

    Roofline Christmas Lights questions, answered

Will the clips damage my tile roof?

No. Clips grip the gutter or tuck under the bottom edge of the tile, and we work from the ladder instead of walking on tile wherever possible.

Can you light only the front of a two-story house?

Yes, and most people do. We’d sooner light the street-facing eaves and peaks completely than put a little on every side.

My house has no gutters. Can lights still go up?

Yes. There are clips for a bare fascia edge and clips that slide under shingles, so gutters aren’t required.

Can I get Elk Grove roofline Christmas lights if my neighborhood has an HOA?

Yes. Lakeside and Heritage Lakeside publish a removal deadline, and other associations keep theirs behind a resident login. Tell us what yours say and both visits get scheduled to fit.
